Crew Terms and Conditions
Last updated 16 September 2026 · Applies to anyone registering with us as crew
The short version
- We never charge you anything. Not to register, not to be put forward, not when you're placed.
- You are employed by the yacht, not by us. We introduce you and then step back.
- Everything you tell us has to be true — certificates, sea time, references, right to work. We check.
- Registering doesn't guarantee a job. We put forward the crew we believe fit the boat.
- You can take your profile down whenever you like.
Who we are
Ocean Yacht Crew P/L, of d'Albora Marinas, Rushcutters Bay, NSW 2011, Australia, introduces deck, engineering, interior and galley crew to yacht owners, captains and management companies.
These terms apply when you register a profile, upload a CV, apply for a vacancy or otherwise ask us to put you forward. By doing any of those things you accept them.
We never charge crew
In accordance with MLC 2006, Regulation 1.4, we charge seafarers no fee of any kind for recruitment or placement. Registration is free, being put forward is free, and being placed is free. All our fees are paid by the employer.
If anyone claiming to represent us asks you for money — a registration fee, a visa fee, a processing fee, a deposit — it is not us. See section 16.
Registering with us
You must be 18 or over to register, and legally entitled to work at sea. Where maritime law permits a younger person to serve and we accept a registration, we require verifiable parental or guardian consent first.
You may hold one profile only. Keep your password to yourself — you are responsible for anything done through your account.
Keep your profile current. Availability, location and certificate expiry dates go stale quickly, and an out-of-date profile is the most common reason good crew get passed over.
Your information must be accurate
Everything you give us must be true and complete — your identity, sea time, previous vessels, qualifications, certificate numbers and expiry dates, reasons for leaving previous boats, and your right to work in the places a vacancy requires.
We verify. We check certificates with issuing authorities, take up references with previous captains, and confirm sea time where we can.
Giving us false or misleading information means we will remove your profile, withdraw you from any live application, and tell the client if you have already been introduced. Where a placement has been made on the strength of it, you may be dismissed and liable to the employer for the consequences.
This matters more at sea than it would ashore. A crew member who overstates a ticket puts the whole boat at risk, and the flag state takes a dim view of it.
Documents you need to hold
What a vacancy requires depends on the vessel, the flag and the role, but as a rule you will need:
- A valid passport with sufficient remaining validity for the itinerary
- STCW Basic Safety Training, current and within its refresher period
- A valid ENG1 or equivalent seafarer medical fitness certificate
- Certificates of competency appropriate to the role
- A seafarer's discharge book, where the flag state requires one
- Visas for the countries on the vessel's programme
Keeping these current is your responsibility. We will tell you when we can see something is close to expiry, but we cannot be relied on to track it for you.
How we use your profile
By registering, you ask us to put you forward for suitable positions and you consent to us sharing your profile, CV, certificates and references with yacht owners, captains, management companies and agents for that purpose.
We tell you which vessel or client before we send your details wherever we can. If you would rather we did not approach a particular boat or company, tell us and we will note it.
Our privacy policy sets out in full what we collect, how long we keep it and what rights you have over it.
Introductions and applications
Registering does not guarantee an introduction, and an introduction does not guarantee an interview or a job. We put forward the crew we believe fit the boat, the programme and the people already on board.
Hiring decisions belong entirely to the yacht. We do not control them, and we cannot always tell you why a decision went the way it did.
We give feedback where we have it. Sometimes we do not, and saying so is more useful than inventing a reason.
We are not your employer
We are an introduction service. Your employer is the yacht, its owning company or its manager — never Ocean Yacht Crew. We do not pay your wages, set your hours, run your appraisals or hold your employment contract.
Nothing in these terms creates a contract of employment, agency or partnership between you and us.
Your contract with the yacht
Salary, rotation, leave, notice and every other term is agreed between you and the employer. We may pass on what a boat is offering and give you a view on whether it is reasonable, but we do not negotiate on your behalf and we are not party to what you sign.
Do not join a vessel without a written Seafarer Employment Agreement. It is your entitlement under MLC 2006 and your only protection if things go wrong. Read it before you sign, and ask us if something in it looks unusual.
Check that the vessel carries valid P&I or equivalent cover for crew injury, illness and repatriation.
Travel, visas and repatriation
Who pays for flights to join a boat varies, and it is a matter between you and the employer. Establish it before you travel rather than after.
Obtaining the right visas is your responsibility. We will tell you what a programme typically needs, but immigration rules change and the consequences of getting it wrong fall on you.
Repatriation is the employer's obligation under MLC 2006. We require our clients to confirm they hold security sufficient to meet it, but we cannot guarantee any particular employer's compliance.
Conduct
When we put you forward, you are representing yourself and, to a degree, us. We ask that you:
- Turn up to interviews and trials, or tell us in good time if you cannot
- Tell us promptly if you accept a position, including one found elsewhere
- Tell us if you become unavailable, so we are not putting you forward for boats you cannot take
- Do not accept a position and then fail to join, or leave without notice
- Deal with clients and with our team professionally
The yachting world is small. A crew member who does not turn up is remembered by the captain, the agency and the next three boats.
Job alerts
If you subscribe to job alerts we will email you vacancies matching the criteria you set. You can change them or unsubscribe at any time, from the link in any alert or from your account.
Taking your profile down
You can hide or delete your profile at any time from your account, or by emailing us.
Deleting it removes you from future searches. We may need to keep a record of placements already made for tax, insurance and legal reasons — our privacy policy sets out how long.
Suspension and removal
We may suspend or remove a profile where we have reason to believe information is false, where a certificate cannot be verified, where conduct towards our clients or our team has been unacceptable, or where a client reports a serious issue we are able to substantiate.
We will tell you why, and you can respond. Where we have made a mistake, we will put it right.
What we are responsible for
We take care over who we introduce you to, and we check what we reasonably can. But we cannot guarantee the accuracy of everything a client tells us about a vessel, a programme, a salary or a working environment.
We are not liable for the acts or omissions of any employer, for the conditions on board, for wages unpaid, or for any loss arising from a position you accept. Our liability to you is limited to the extent the law allows, and nothing here excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.
If a placement goes wrong, tell us. We would rather know, and it affects whether we work with that boat again.
Recruitment fraud
Crew are a regular target for recruitment scams
We will never:
- Ask you to pay a registration, placement, visa or processing fee
- Ask for your bank details in order to send you a vacancy
- Ask you to send money to secure a position or a flight
- Offer you a job without an interview or a conversation first
Emails from us come from an @oceanyachtcrew.com address. If something looks wrong, contact us on the number below before you act on it.
Changes and contact
We update these terms when our services or the law change. The date at the top shows the current version. If a change materially affects you, we will tell registered crew by email before it takes effect.
